Reddit without the endless home feed: your communities, your threads

Toggle opens Reddit on your iPhone with recommended posts and communities hidden for good. Hide Home, Hide Like counts (votes), Hide Comments and Grayscale are switches you set. Communities, search, your inbox, chat, posting and notifications keep working. Reddit's own setting, Show recommendations in home feed, is covered too. Free to download, paid after the 7-day trial.

Toggle (toggle.social) is an iPhone app that opens Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat inside one app, with the parts built to keep you scrolling switched off. On Reddit the part is the recommendations: the posts and communities Reddit adds to your Home feed because its model thinks you'll stay. Toggle hides them from the first load. Hiding the Home feed itself, vote counts and comments is up to you.

Reddit is unusual among these apps in that most of what people come for (a community, a thread, an answer) isn't the feed at all. This page maps each Reddit surface against Reddit's own settings, Toggle's switches and what stays, and ends with every Reddit page on the site.

Reddit in Toggle

Every Reddit surface, in one table

"Locked" means on from the first load and showable for five minutes at a time. "Your choice" means off when you start.

Surface Reddit's own control In Toggle What stays
Recommended posts and communities Show recommendations in home feed (off) Hidden (locked) Your communities' posts
Home feed Sort (Best, Hot, New, Top); Latest in the app Hide Home (your choice) Communities, search, inbox, chat
Popular, News, r/all Mute communities from Popular Open as on reddit.com Each feed as a page
Vote counts None (Reddit hides them briefly after posting) Hide Like counts (your choice) Voting
Comments Sort; autoplay off for media Hide Comments (your choice) Replying
Autoplay video and GIFs Settings, Media and animations Fewer videos ahead on slow links Media in posts
Colour None Grayscale (your choice) Media in grey
Chat and inbox Reddit's own Kept Direct messages, replies

Switches apply to Reddit alone and take effect at once.

What Toggle hides for good: suggested posts and communities

Reddit's help is plain about where recommendations come from. The Home feed "by default also includes recommendations for content and communities that you may not be subscribed to", ranked with "your activity on Reddit", "your account age" and "your location setting" among the inputs, and "for users with newer accounts or fewer community subscriptions, our models may emphasize recommendations over subscriptions" (Reddit's Approach to Content Recommendations, checked October 24, 2026).

Hide Suggested is a locked switch in Toggle: on from the first load, and it can't be turned off for good. From the options sheet (hold the Toggle switch at the bottom of Reddit for a moment) or Settings, a locked switch can be shown for five minutes at a time; it turns itself back on at the deadline. Onboarding explains the lock before you meet it.

Your switches: Home, vote counts, comments, grayscale

  • Hide Home removes the Home feed. Reddit opens on Home, so with the feed gone you land on a quiet page and go where you meant to: a community, a search, your inbox or chat. The deep version of this setup, and what Reddit's own setting misses, is on Reddit without the home feed.
  • Hide Like counts (votes) removes the numbers on posts and comments. You can still vote.
  • Hide Comments hides comment threads under posts. Most people leave this off; it's there for anyone who wants to read posts and not the replies.
  • Grayscale turns Reddit grey.

All four start off. Vote and like counts across every app, with the native control where one exists, are compared on Hide like counts on every social app.

What keeps working

  • Chat and your inbox (direct messages on every app).
  • Posting and commenting. Comments open in Reddit's page, as on the mobile site.
  • Communities, profiles and search. Popular, News and r/all are pages like any other and open as they do on reddit.com; Toggle has no switch for them.
  • Notifications, per app: all, messages only (direct messages, replies, comments, mentions), or off. Reddit's own web push is passed through Toggle's relay to Apple's push service, encrypted end to end to your iPhone. If the real Reddit app is installed and not blocked, Toggle holds back its notifications so you don't get two. See Notifications in Toggle.
  • On a slow connection Toggle loads smaller images and fewer videos ahead.

What Reddit itself lets you change

Reddit has more native controls over its feed than most apps. Paths below are from Reddit's help pages, checked October 24, 2026.

Recommendations. "If you're on iOS or Android, go to your account settings and scroll down to Privacy. From there, you'll see the option to turn off the toggle to Show recommendations in home feed." On reddit.com, the same toggle is in your preferences. Reddit's help says the recommendations appear "when sorting by Best", its personalised default sort. The toggle removes the recommended posts; Best still ranks your own communities' posts by what Reddit predicts you'll like.

Feeds. Home is "a feed of all the communities you've joined". Popular is the most popular posts across Reddit, News is news shared by communities, and the app adds Latest, your communities sorted by new. In the app, tap the menu near the top left of Home to switch. r/all is at old.reddit.com/r/all.

Muting communities. Muting excludes a community from your notifications, Home feed (recommendations included) and Popular, up to 1,000 communities. On a community page, tap the overflow menu and Mute r/[name]. In Settings: Account settings, the safety section, Manage muted communities. On a recommended post, "Show fewer posts like this" stops suggestions from that community.

Autoplay. In the app: Settings, Media and animations (under Accessibility). Autoplay Video Previews offers Always, Only on Wi-Fi or Never, and Autoplay Animated Images is a toggle. On reddit.com: Settings, Preferences, Autoplay Media.

Vote counts. There is no setting. Reddit hides votes "the first few hours after a post is created" to prevent vote manipulation, and some communities hide them on posts and comments for longer.

Reddit on a computer

The free Chrome extension does the same on reddit.com: switches for Home, Like counts and Comments, plus Grayscale, and two that cover every site (hide like counts everywhere, hide every endless feed). The Toggle switch at the top of the popup brings everything back for 20 minutes, then turns itself back on. Changes apply with no reload, and nothing is sent anywhere. See Toggle for Chrome. A Safari extension is coming to the Mac App Store.

Where Toggle is not the answer

Toggle is iPhone only (iOS 17 or later) and paid after the 7-day trial (pricing); on a computer the free Chrome extension gives reddit.com the same switches. It runs Reddit's mobile site, so an app-only feature can be missing, and a switch can break when Reddit changes its pages until Toggle updates. It is not parental control. The full list of limits is on Toggle for iPhone.

Questions

Can you turn off recommendations in the Reddit home feed?

Yes, in Reddit itself: on iOS, Settings, Account settings, Privacy, then turn off Show recommendations in home feed. On reddit.com it's under Preferences. Reddit's help says it covers the recommended posts in the Best sort; Popular and the ranking of your own communities stay.

Can I use Reddit with only my subreddits?

In Toggle, Hide Suggested is on from the first load, and Hide Home is a switch you can add. With Home hidden, Reddit is your communities, search, inbox and chat.

Can Reddit hide vote counts?

Not as a setting. Reddit hides votes for the first few hours after a post, and some communities hide them longer, both to prevent vote manipulation. Toggle's Hide Like counts (votes) switch removes the numbers on every post and comment.

Do comments still work in Toggle?

Yes. Comment threads open in Reddit's page as they do on the mobile site, and you can reply. Hide Comments is an optional switch that starts off.

Does Reddit chat work inside Toggle?

Yes. You sign in with your own Reddit account, and chat, your inbox, posting, profiles, search and notifications keep working.
