Toggle (toggle.social) is a free Chrome extension that keeps the parts of social media you came for and hides the parts built to keep you scrolling. It works on the desktop sites of Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat, site by site, and it is the desktop half of the Toggle iPhone app, which does the same inside one app on your phone. The extension is listed on the Chrome Web Store as "Toggle".
What the extension hides on each site
Choose what goes, site by site: short-video feeds like Reels and Shorts, endless home feeds, Explore pages, suggested posts, like counts, comments and replies. Any site can also go grayscale. Each switch is off until you turn it on, and changes apply at once, with no reload.
| Site | Desktop switches |
|---|---|
| Reels, Explore, Suggested, Home, Stories, Like counts | |
| YouTube | Shorts, Home, Like counts |
| TikTok | For You, Explore, LIVE |
| X | Home, Explore, Grok, Videos, Like counts |
| Threads | Home (For You), Like counts, Replies |
| Home, Like counts, Comments | |
| Home, Suggested, Like counts | |
| Reels, Watch, Home, Marketplace, Stories, Like counts | |
| Snapchat | Grayscale only |
Grayscale is available on every site. Snapchat on the web is chat only, so grayscale is its only switch. The X switches also work on twitter.com, and the Threads switches on threads.net as well as threads.com.
What stays is everything else on the page: your messages, your own posts and profile, search, the people and channels you follow, notifications, and whatever you open on purpose. Hide YouTube's Home and your subscriptions, search and the video you came for stay. Hide Instagram's Reels and Explore and the site is your feed, Stories, DMs and profiles. The iPhone pages for Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat map each site's surfaces in detail; the desktop switches cover the same surfaces where the table lists them.
Two switches for every site at once
Two switches at the top of the popup cover every supported site together: hide like counts everywhere, and hide every endless feed. Turn on the first and like counts go on Instagram, YouTube, X, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn and Facebook in one move. Turn on the second and the endless feeds (Reels, Shorts, For You, the Home feeds and the rest) go on every site that has one. The per-site switches still work underneath, so you can set the global switch and then bring back one site's Home feed if you want it.
The 20-minute break
The Toggle switch at the top of the popup brings everything back for 20 minutes. Flick it and every hidden part shows again on every site; after 20 minutes it turns itself back on and the hiding resumes. There is nothing to remember and nothing to reset. It is there for the moments you need to find a Reel someone mentioned or check a video on YouTube's Home, without turning your switches off one by one and forgetting to turn them back on.
How to install Toggle in Chrome
- Open Toggle on the Chrome Web Store in Chrome 120 or later.
- Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm. The extension asks to read and change the nine social sites it works on, and nothing else.
- Click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin Toggle so its icon stays in view.
- Open one of the sites, for example instagram.com, and click the Toggle icon. The popup shows that site's switches.
- Turn on what you want hidden. The page changes at once; there is no reload and no sign-in.
The two global switches and the 20-minute break switch sit at the top of the same popup, on every site.
No account, nothing sent anywhere
The extension runs entirely in your browser. There is no account to make, no tracking and nothing is sent anywhere. It asks only for permission to work on the nine sites it supports, plus Chrome's storage for your switches and alarms for the 20-minute timer. You stay signed in to each site exactly as before; Toggle changes what the page shows, not who you are on it.
What the Chrome extension doesn't do
- It doesn't work on phones. Chrome extensions run on computers. For Instagram, YouTube and the rest on an iPhone, the Toggle iPhone app has the same switches and more, including notifications and blocking the real apps with Screen Time.
- It doesn't block sites or set time limits. It changes what a site shows; it doesn't stop you opening the site. If you want a site gone altogether, a blocker is a different tool.
- It isn't in Safari yet. Toggle for Safari, a free Mac app with the same switches, is coming to the Mac App Store.
- It hides, it doesn't delete. Your account, history and settings on each site are untouched. Turn a switch off and everything is as it was.
- Sites change. A switch can stop working until Toggle updates.
- Expect fewer ads, not none. The extension's switches are about feeds and counts, not ad removal.
Chrome extension or iPhone app?
| Chrome extension | iPhone app | |

Questions
Does the Toggle extension remove Reels from Instagram?
Yes. The Reels switch for instagram.com hides Reels on the desktop site. Explore, suggested posts, Home, Stories and like counts have switches of their own.
Does it block YouTube Shorts?
Yes. The Shorts switch for youtube.com hides Shorts, and separate switches hide the Home feed and like counts. Your subscriptions, search and the videos you open stay.
Is the Toggle Chrome extension free?
Yes, with no paid tier. The iPhone app is the paid product: free to download, paid after the 7-day trial.
Does the extension collect any data?
No. It runs in your browser with no account and no tracking, and nothing is sent anywhere. Your switch settings are stored by Chrome.
Can I use it on an Android phone?
On a computer, yes: Android users can use the Chrome extension on a computer. There is no Toggle app for Android phones.
