Reddit without the home feed

Reddit's own switch is Settings → Privacy → Show recommendations in home feed (web: Preferences). Off, Home shows only communities you joined, but Home and Popular stay the first thing you see. Toggle (toggle.social) hides suggested posts for good and can hide Home itself, leaving communities, search, chat and your inbox.

Toggle (toggle.social) is an iPhone app that opens Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, X, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook and Snapchat inside one app, with the parts built to keep you scrolling switched off. For Reddit that means suggested posts never show, and the Home feed itself is a switch. This page covers Reddit without a home feed: what Reddit's own setting does, what it leaves, and what Toggle changes. Every Reddit surface and every Reddit page on this site is mapped on the Reddit page.

Home vs Popular vs a community page

Reddit has one kind of page that is yours and several that are everyone's. Reddit Help, checked October 24, 2026, defines them:

Feed Reddit Help's definition Whose content
Home "a feed of all the communities you've joined" Yours, plus recommended posts when the setting is on
Popular "a feed of the (you guessed it) most popular posts on Reddit" Everyone's, by net upvotes
All "a less filtered feed of the most popular posts on Reddit" Everyone's, including most NSFW
News "news shared by communities across Reddit" Everyone's
Latest (app) your communities "sorted by 'new'" Yours, chronological
A community (r/name) one subreddit's posts That community's

The trap is at the top. Home sorted by Best is ranked, and with recommendations on it carries posts from communities you never joined, each with a Join button. Popular is a tap away in the feed switcher. A community page, by contrast, has an end: it shows that subreddit's posts and nothing else.

In December 2025 Reddit's CEO Steve Huffman said Popular "gives the false impression of a singular Reddit culture" and that Reddit is "moving away from it, and towards better, more relevant and personalized feeds." New accounts no longer get Popular as a default. Read that carefully: the replacement is more personalisation, not less.

Reddit's own recommendation setting

Reddit calls the mixed-in posts "home feed recommendations." Its help article (updated October 21, 2026) says they use machine learning to improve the Best sort by "personalizing and ranking content," and they appear when Home is sorted by Best.

To turn them off, checked October 24, 2026:

  • iPhone and Android app: tap your avatar → Settings → scroll to Privacy → turn off Show recommendations in home feed.
  • reddit.com: open Preferences → turn off Show recommendations in home feed.

Each recommended post also has "Show fewer posts like this" in its ⋯ menu.

What the setting misses

  • Home is still ranked. Best stays the default sort; you can pick New each time or use the app's Latest feed, but neither sticks as a replacement for Home.
  • Popular, All and News are still in the feed switcher at the top of Home.
  • Posts from communities you joined are still a feed without an end, and a community's top posts are still ranked by votes you can see.
  • Nothing about the setting changes vote counts, comment sorting or the recommendations on the search page.

So "recommendations off" gives you a Home feed of your own communities, which is a good deal quieter. It does not give you Reddit without a home feed.

Toggle's Reddit switches

Toggle opens Reddit on Home, with suggested posts gone. Hide Suggested is a locked switch: on from the first load, and not something you can turn off for good. From the options sheet (hold the Toggle switch at the bottom of the app for a moment) or from Settings, a locked switch can be shown for five minutes at a time, and it turns itself back on at the deadline.

The rest are your choice, off when you start. Defaults as of version 1.5 (October 2026):

Switch Default What it does
Hide Suggested Always off (locked; five-minute show) No recommended posts anywhere in Home
Hide Home Your choice The Home feed goes; Reddit becomes communities, search and your inbox
Hide Like counts (votes) Your choice Vote counts hidden on posts and comments
Hide Comments Your choice Comment threads hidden under posts
Grayscale Your choice The page in black and white

Reddit in Toggle

With Hide Home on, there is no feed to open onto. You get to a community by searching for it or from your joined list, read it, and leave. Popular is not a tab. This is the "Reddit without the home feed" the setting above can't give you.

Switches apply per app, at once. Turning a hidden part back on reloads only what needs it. Hiding only the suggested posts, and the vote counts, each have their own page on this site; here they are two rows of the table.

Vote counts as a switch

Reddit has no native way to hide upvote counts; the number sits on every post and comment. Toggle's Hide Like counts switch for Reddit hides votes on posts and comments. It is off when you start. The reason it is here: once Home is gone, a community page sorted by Hot is still ranked by those numbers, and reading without them makes the sort less visible. How the same switch works on every app is on Hide like counts everywhere.

Chat, inbox and notifications keep working

Direct messages work on every app in Toggle, and on Reddit that means chat and your inbox. Posting and commenting work. Profiles and search work, which matters more here than anywhere: with Home hidden, search is how you get to a community you haven't saved.

Notifications are optional, per app: all, messages only (direct messages, replies, comments, mentions) or off. They come through Reddit's own web push, passed through Toggle's relay to Apple's push service, encrypted end to end to your iPhone. If the Reddit app is installed and not blocked, Toggle holds back its own Reddit notifications so you don't get two. Details are on the notifications help page.

Where Toggle is not the answer

Toggle is iPhone only (iOS 17 or later). There is no Android app. The iPhone app is free to download and paid after the 7-day trial: $6.99 a week or $99 a year in the US on October 24, 2026, prices on the pricing page. If your budget is zero, Reddit's own setting plus the Latest feed gets you most of the way.

Toggle uses Reddit's mobile website inside the app, so an app-only feature may be missing, and Reddit changes its site often: a switch can stop working until Toggle updates. Old Reddit (old.reddit.com) is a different site and a different page on this site.

On a computer, the free Chrome extension hides reddit.com's Home feed, vote counts and comments as switches, with changes at once and no reload; Toggle for Safari is coming to the Mac App Store. How Toggle works under the hood is on How Toggle works, and X has the same Following-first treatment on X without For You.

Questions

How do I turn off Reddit recommendations?

In the Reddit app, open your account settings, scroll to Privacy and turn off Show recommendations in home feed. On reddit.com the same switch is under Preferences. It removes recommended posts from Home's Best sort; Home and Popular stay.

Can I use Reddit with only the subreddits I follow?

Yes. Turn off home feed recommendations, then read Home sorted by New or use the Latest feed in the app. In Toggle you can go further and hide Home, so Reddit opens on your communities, search and inbox instead of a feed.

What is the difference between Home and Popular on Reddit?

Reddit Help defines Home as a feed of all the communities you've joined, and Popular as a feed of the most popular posts on Reddit. Home is yours; Popular is everyone's.

Is r/popular going away?

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said in December 2025 that Reddit is moving away from Popular as a default feed for new users. The feed still exists and is still reachable.

Can I hide upvote counts on Reddit?

Reddit has no setting for it. Toggle has a Hide Like counts switch for Reddit that hides votes on posts and comments, off when you start.
